Bench & Floor Features

Our ancient plank houses were built to be open, flexible spaces. They had many types of features above and below ground for living, cooking, and storing our belongings. Family spaces were marked by low reed mats, staked into place. Some houses had raised benches, picture here, to create spaces for sleeping, sitting and storing things. Storage was also built into the roof.
