Core

A core is a block of stone that is chipped away to make stone tools. Flint knappers often chose pebbles from gravel bars in the river, selecting fine-grained stones like basalt, quartzite and chert (flint) as core material. Hunters would carry cores, or cache them, to make sure they could make new tools while out on the land.
