Red Elderberry

Red elderberry bushes grow tall around the village site Qithyil. Ancient Stό:lō loved these bitter berries. As they were eaten, the seeds were spit into the fire, where they preserved. Red elderberry seeds are the most commonly found fruit in archaeology sites throughout the West Coast. Our communities do not eat them nearly as much today.
